About
About Moss Atelier
Moss Atelier is a small set of free tools for knitters and crocheters: a gauge calculator, a yarn yardage estimator, an increase and decrease evenly calculator, a yarn weight chart, a needle and hook size converter and a row counter. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to install.
How it works
Every calculation runs in your browser. What you type is not sent to a server, and the row counter keeps its counts in your browser's local storage on your own device. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views; it works without cookies and never receives what you type into the tools. The privacy page has the details.
Where the numbers come from
Yarn weights, gauges, needle and hook sizes and body measurements come from the Craft Yarn Council's published standards. British and Australian yarn names and old UK needle numbers come from the comparison tables on Wikipedia, and the yarn-per-area rule behind the yardage estimate comes from textile research on plain knitting. Each page lists its sources, and anything that is an estimate is shown as a range and labelled as one.
The calculations are covered by automated tests, including awkward cases such as more increases than stitches, decreases steeper than k2tog allows and stitch counts that will not divide evenly.
What it is not
The tools do not replace your pattern or your swatch. Where a pattern gives its own gauge, sizes or yarn amounts, follow the pattern, and knit a swatch before you start: no calculator knows your hands.
