Knitting gauge, yarn & crochet calculators

Shaping calculator

Increase or decrease evenly across a row

Type the stitches you have and the stitches you need. You get the row written out the way patterns write it, and a stitch map showing where every increase or decrease goes.

Instructions

96 → 108 stitches: 12 increases in the round.

Shaping round[K8, M1] 12 times (108 sts)

  • Start at the beginning-of-round marker.

How to use it

Enter the stitches on your needles and the number you need after the shaping row. The calculator decides whether that is an increase or a decrease and spaces the changes as evenly as whole stitches allow.

Gaps that differ by one stitch are grouped so the row is easy to follow; the stitch map shows exactly where each change falls, and every instruction ends with the new stitch count to check against.

Worked example

A yoke with 96 stitches that needs 108 in the round has 12 increases, one after every 8 stitches: [K8, M1] 12 times. Worked flat, 53 stitches with 10 increases gives gaps of 5.3 stitches, so the row reads K3, M1, [K6, M1] twice, [K5, M1] 7 times, K3, ending with 63 stitches.

Questions about spacing shaping

Why are some gaps one stitch longer than others?

Stitches rarely divide exactly. 53 stitches with 10 increases gives gaps of 5.3, so most gaps are 5 stitches and a few are 6. A difference of one stitch does not show in the finished fabric.

Which increase should I use?

Follow your pattern if it names one. Otherwise M1 is the least visible in stocking stitch, kfb leaves a small horizontal bar beside the stitch (handy in garter or rib), and a yarn over makes an eyelet, which is right for lace.

What if I need more increases than I have stitches?

One row holds at most one M1 in each gap between stitches, or one kfb in each stitch. The calculator spreads the rest over two or more rows and grows the count steadily, the way a round yoke does.

Can I decrease more than half the stitches in one row?

Not with k2tog alone, because each one takes two stitches. Up to two thirds of the stitches can go in one row if some decreases are k3tog, and the calculator uses them only when it has to. For a smoother slope, decrease over two rows instead.

Where does a shaping round start?

At the beginning-of-round marker. If the round is divided by other markers, such as raglan lines, work out each section separately and repeat its instructions between the markers.
